Conclusion
In recent years, rapid progress has been made in the understandingof Ca2+ signaling in plants, especially in the area of plant–microbeinteractions. While accepting the unique roles of Ca2+ as a
messenger, one must realize the complexities and the challenges ofCa2+/CaM-mediated signaling and its crosstalk with differentsignal transduction pathways in plants. It is clear that Ca2+ can
have both positive and negative regulatory roles. It is also clear thatprotein phosphorylation triggered by Ca2+ and Ca2+/CaMtogether further plays a crucial role in signal amplification. Hence,
the EDS1 and ICS1 examples described by Lenzoni et al. in theirattempt to predict gene expression by modeling the decodingmechanism of Ca2+ signatures have promise but the complexinteractions between Ca2+ and its target proteins – and crosstalkbetween signaling pathways – will requirefurther refining to makethis mathematical modeling and experimental approach useful on
a broader scale.
